Density filamentation nonlinearly driven by the Weibel instability in relativistic beam plasmas

چکیده

Density filamentation has been observed in many beam-plasma simulations and experiments. Because current is a pure transverse mode, charge density cannot be produced directly by the process. To explain this phenomenon, several mechanisms are proposed such as coupling of Weibel instability to two-stream instability, Langmuir wave, differences thermal velocities between beam return currents, magnetic pressure gradient force, etc. In paper, it shown that Lorentz factor can, fact, represent nonlinear behavior plasma fluid further nonuniform distribution can give rise electrostatic fields filaments. Simulation results together with theoretical analyses presented.

Filamentation instability of counterstreaming laser-driven plasmas.

Filamentation due to the growth of a Weibel-type instability was observed in the interaction of a pair of counterstreaming, ablatively driven plasma flows, in a supersonic, collisionless regime relevant to astrophysical collisionless shocks. The flows were created by irradiating a pair of opposing plastic (CH) foils with 1.8 kJ, 2-ns laser pulses on the OMEGA EP Laser System. Ultrafast laser-dr...

Acceleration Mechanics in Relativistic Shocks by the Weibel Instability

Plasma instabilities (e.g., Buneman, Weibel and other two-stream instabilities) created in collisionless shocks may be responsible for particle (electron, positron, and ion) acceleration. Using a 3-D relativistic electromagnetic particle (REMP) code, we have investigated particle acceleration associated with relativistic electron-ion or electron-positron jet fronts propagating into an unmagneti...

Collision-driven negative-energy waves and the weibel instability of a relativistic electron beam in a quasineutral plasma.

A new model describing the Weibel instability of a relativistic electron beam propagating through a resistive plasma is developed. For finite-temperature beams, a new class of negative-energy magnetosound waves is identified, whose growth due to collisional dissipation destabilizes the beam-plasma system even for high beam temperatures. We perform 2D and 3D particle-in-cell simulations and show...

Weibel-induced filamentation during an ultrafast laser-driven plasma expansion.

The development of current instabilities behind the front of a cylindrically expanding plasma has been investigated experimentally via proton probing techniques. A multitude of tubelike filamentary structures is observed to form behind the front of a plasma created by irradiating solid-density wire targets with a high-intensity (I ~ 10(19) W/cm(2)), picosecond-duration laser pulse. These filame...

Efficiency of proton-driven Weibel instability at thermalizing initially two-temperature astrophysical plasmas

Whether a faster-than-Coulomb collisionless mechanism equilibrates ion-electron plasmas with ions initially much hotter than electrons is a fundamental plasma physics question and important for understanding low-luminosity astrophysical accretion flows. Here we study whether Weibel instabilities driven by proton temperature anisotropy produce such a mechanism. From theory and particle-in-cell s...
